The State Of My Vidding

The Never-Ending Job

When I started into this copyright free style I hadn't realized just how much work it was going to be just to get the material I needed. I'm currently converting the 50 Sci-Fi movies I purchased. Luckily this can be done while I'm doing other things, like work. I read a little then write a few paragraphs. Then I look to the side to check the progress of the conversion. Who knows how long this would take if I couldn't do this simultaneously with other things.

Vacation Vid

It's quite surprising how this project is going. The more I work with it the quicker the project is moving. It's also showing me my shortcomings when I look at the beginning of the vid. It's quite possible that toward the end I will redo parts of the vid because I'm not really happy with the results. I was happy with it when I first did it but since then I've learned enough to tell me where I went wrong.

Old VHS Footage

And previously I had converted some old VHS tapes for Beverly. It was footage of her sone when he was young. Originally I had intended to merely converted it to digital and burn it onto a DVD. But with this vacation project I'm beginning to see something else that could be done. Right now Rees over five hours of footage. Most people would never want to sit through that much [ just like my 1300+ vacation photos&sp;].

So my thought, which I'll present to Beverly, is to make a much short one. One that people would actually be able to sit through. We'll see...

drawingBoard, Scanned picture from a publication issued by the company S.K.F. (SKF) around 1940-45.

The Flipbook

Here's anoth project that's on the computer but hasn't gone anywhere. Is still a hi-priority but I don't have the time. Bt if I'm going to use it as a new intro then it's got to move up the list. It shouldn't really take that long. I've done all the scoping out of her original. And although it's going to be tedious, it's all about the same techniques. Images move from off the top of the screen to the center in order once I have one done I can copy the behavior to each new image. That will make it easier.

The hard part will be the creation of all the images with the text that cuts in and out. No need for any fancy alpha channels or effects. Just straight photo editing. And that I've been doing for over 20 years now.

Themes? What Themes?

And the casualty of all this time spent on ripping and learning Motion is finding music. And to be truthful, that's one of the most important things I need to be doing. Sure, what people notice first is the video footage but without any music there's no vid. And compared to the preparation of the video resources, listening to new music takes a lot more time and effort.

Hold Your Horses, You'll Get You Vacation vid...

Making Progress

Yeap, making progress all right. And I'm actually not getting as lost as I was when I first started playing with Motion. Guess I'm starting to acclimate to the 3D environment in the motion graphics. But it's not been easy.

I've got about 1½ minutes [ in beta ] for Bev to see this weekend. No music, just some individual pieces. Still needs a lot of polish. I know I'll improve as time goes on but this one is still rough.

Deep Thoughts About Vidding [7]

Deep Thought, This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic license.

It's Been A Hectic Week

I just realized how much I had done this week and how much I hadn't posted. Probably due to the upcoming job search that's going to start. But that's another story.

The Motion In The Ocean - The Atlantic

Work continues on learning Motion 4 in an attempt to placate give my relevant other the vacation vid she's wanted. I doubt it will achieve the level I would like but everyone needs to start somewhere.

I have the beginning done as a beta and will be showing Bev this weekend. That way she can tell me if she likes it or not. Since it's primarily for her she gets a good bit of say so in the final product. But she's been patient. I told her when the muse hit something interesting would pop up and I believe now is the time.

Originally I was going to do a commentary style akin to what I had seen with Felicia Day's trip to Belize.

I do love perky redheads. But I digress. Although that style works for her I'm not sure if it would work for me. I'm just not that perky. Instead I've decided to go with the kinetic type style I posted previously.I'm far more capable of creating type in a humourous manner rather than trying to do in on screen. I leave that to the professionals.

Ripping Is Still Boring

I'm still in the process of ripping all the disks I got. There are still 24 sides to rip with all the Sci-Fi movies I got. Then after I get them all ripped they need to go into the database so I can keep track of them. Yet another housekeeping chore. It's amazing just how much of vidding isn't actually vidding. It's taking care of the little things that keep order to the larger effort.

Quantity vs. Quality

As I suspected many of the movies on these movie packs are not the greatest quality. Some of them actually look like there were ripped from an old VHS copy. BUt I knew that was a distinct possibility. Even if only ½ of them turn out as good quality I'll still have lots more than I'll have time to use.

The Charade vid

projector,'ve now got an excellent version of the movie and will be proceeding with that one - as soon as the muse decides to visit me. One of the main problems [ which plagues all my new vidding efforts ] is finding the best song to use.

I could see this as a great Mission Impossible mashup or The Avengers or maybe even an Inception trailer. There's probably a dozen more I could think of given a little time. But now I'm relegating myself to non-copyrighted music. And that makes it a little more time-consuming. If I can find a piece I can use that sounds like any of these that's the direction it will take. Until then I'll keep looking.

Okay, back to work...

Another Day-Not Another Vid

½ Way Through The Sci-Fi Movies

Figured I'd better get these ripped while I'm at it. Sort of a mindless chore so I can actually do this while I'm sitting at the other computer getting some serious work accomplished. Okay, not so serious but necessary.

I realize that I haven't browsed through any music at all this week. There's just never enough time.

And if that's not bad enough instead of reading through the Motion book I'm picking up the Java book a lot more because unlike my vidding, a programming job would be a better source of income. But again, I digress.

Sherlock Holmes

No, not the current BBC one or even the 80s Jeremy Brett one. This is the one that many people automatically think of when you say, Sherlock Holmes. It's the Basil Rathbone movies. Well, at least four of them. There's Secret Weapon, Terror By Night, Dressed to Kill, and The Woman in Green. Unfortunately the Hound of the Baskervilles is NOT Public Domain. That would have made for such a wonderful opening.

But with four movies with containing the same characters there's a lot more that can be done than when you're working with but a single movie. I'm definitely looking into those possibilities.

A Question Of Resolution

iPad or MacBook

I still intend in trying a motion comic. But I'm unsure as to whether I will try to do it on the iPad or move back to the MacBook and PhotoShop. I know what Photoshop is capable of but I'm still unsure of the quality I could do with the iPad.

Vaunda [my beta] says, "If you start out with the lower quality on the iPad you can always move up to the hi-definition of Photoshop. People don't mind an increase in quality. But if you start with Photoshop then decide to give the iPad a try it might not go over well cause you're decreasing the quality." That's why I listen to her.

The biggest advantage of the iPad over PhotoShop and the Wacom tablet is the ability to turn the iPad as I'm drawing. Sounds like a simple thing but it is acts much more like natural drawing. With the Wacom tablet you can turn it but the screen on the computer stay stationary.

On the other hand when your working in 300dpi in PhotoShop you can make some really detailed shadings. You can never get more than 72dpi in SketchPro on the iPad.

But the interesting thing in this experiment would be akin to what I'm doing with the public domain movies. Can I take something of less quality and turn it into a first rate piece? It's sort of irresistible.

Over The Hump

½ Down ½ To Go

I got the 50 Mystery movies ripped and converted. That was a relief. Not all of them will be usable as it's obvious that some of them were taken from less than pristine originals. But that doesn't matter. There's still a ton of other material to use.

Now it's onto the 50 Sci-Fi movies. Figure that will take another week to do. Finally it's onto the Gamara movies!

I have started pulling out some frames I'll need for the Marvel Opening Sequence. Figure that 11 second little sequence is going to take longer than some of those 1 ½ minute vids I've done.

But now it's time for bed and some light reading before sleep...

Taking A Breather Between Rips

Deep Thought, This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic license.

Still Busy

Ripping over 50 sides of DVDs takes time. And I don't want to interrupt the process or it will never get done. But in the mean time I've been mulling over what's next.

This is a good time for planning projects. Making sure all the ducks are in a row before heading out in a new direction. General ideas are behind the cut.

Not The Fun Part Of Vidding

And The Ripping Begins

Figured I'd better get started. There are 24 disks to rip then they need the individual movies converted. It's amazing how much non-vidding work needs done.

I've checked the Sci-Fi movies and it seems like all 50 are Public Domain. I want to make sure before I start using any of them. I don't know the quality yet, I'll see when the conversion process begins. But you can never tell if you're getting a print made form the master 35mm film or a 3rd generation copy from a VHS tape. I can already guess that the Rocky Jones episodes will be crappy. Everything I ran across says they looked like 3rd gen VHS rips. Can't have everything...

Then I've got to enter them all into the movie database I've started. Then I have to get it moved over to the iPhone. That way if I'm out and about and see a big bin of cheap movies I'll have the list with me.

I'll probably add movies I don't have but might want. Sort of a Wish List.

So it's 2200 hours and Castle is about to start. I got 14 sides ripped and that's a good start.

100 Movies

I Got Movies!

Got he from work to my package from Amazon. 100 classic movies, most public domain. First big step in putting together a source library. Now all I have to do is find the time to rip them...

Deep Thoughts About Vidding [6]

This is a little something I need to write just to get out of my system. It's not a grip and it's not a rant and it's not a bitch about anybody's fandom. It's just my feelings about how important a role content plays in some vidder's lives.
Deep Thought, This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic license.

Content vs. Technique

A while back I had this discussion with a few people over at LiveJournal. The discussin was about what was more important, Content or Technique. It was generally agreed that content was the overriding factor every time.

I Can't Believe This!

WTF YouTube

As you know, I've been trying to do this vidding all by the book now. Making sure all my material is Pubic Domain, Creative Commons, or purchased. Yeah, I'm taking the hard road. But it seems that even though I'm trying to make something of this new style, YouTube has other ideas.

Please Explain This!

How can a vid using Public Domain movie footage with a song purchased from audionetwork have a Content ID problem!!!

WTF YouTube

Really, This has to be the biggest bunch of bullshit I've ever heard of.

I disputed this issue and immediately I got this:

All content owners have reviewed your video and agreed with your dispute:
Your video has been restored to its original state.

Please note that the video's status can change; if another content owner claims it, this process may repeat. You may want to check your videos' status periodically.

Please take a few minutes to visit our Help Center section on Policy and Copyright Guidelines, where you can learn more about copyright law and our Content Identification Service.

Entity: Music Publishing Rights Collecting Society Content Type: Musical Composition.

What, it was instantaneous! I disputed and within a millisecond they viewed it and determined they were wrong!

Now I need to find out who the fuck the Music Publishing Rights Collecting Society is...

ETA 2: They Don't Seem To Exist

I can't find anything on this organization. No web site at all. And loads of other people on YouTube seems to be hassled by these idiots also. They just go around claiming things. They claimed someone playing Bach on their violin. Clearly, that's not possible.

We truly do live in a world of idiots, don't we...

Sounds Like Mike Post

Mike Post

Mike Post

I don't think I've mentioned how much I love the music of Mike Post. In my previous vidding life I did quite a few openings with themes of this man. I don't think there was a more prolific theme writer. It's even difficult to describe exactly what it is that I love about his music.

It's bouncy and light and dramatic and brassy. It's all those things and more. And since it's so unique I think that's why I'm having such a hard time finding music that sounds like his work.

My Library Just Got A Boost

projector, last week of two found me wanting to get in as many of those PD movies as possible.

First it was going to be the download route from The Internet Archive. Lots of stuff but some of it as middling quality.

Then I looked at Netflix. It's a find way of getting them but at two DVDs at a time it would take quite a while to build up the collection. Besides, I like my Netflix account for other movies and TV shows I'd like to watch, not just vid.

Next I began checking out the local library system. I already know they have a pretty extensive catalog of TV Shows on DVD and found many from the list on The Internet Archive. Their problem is that many patrons don't know how to take care of the disks and you often end up with one that won't play or has problems.

Well, finally I checked my last venue. Boy did I get an interesting surprise...

That's A Bit Steep For A Hobby

The Ups and Downs Of It

I like It's a way to find music to use for vids that not going to get your vid taken down. And at $1.35/song it's totally a bargain. But there are a few drawbacks to the site [not big ones but still].

Another Revelation - More Movies

Shhh, We're In A Library

A few days ago I had a revelation. Following that I found a whole bunch of Pubic Domain movies on Netflix. So I packed up my queue to get things moving. But with only two disks out at a time it's going to take some time to get them shipped and prepped.

Not the best solution but better than downloading files from The Internet Archive. And they'll be better quality.

But then I thought, "Hey, I know of another source of DVDs. And the turnaround is a lot quicker.". And that source? The public library. And the city I live in has a sizable amount of disks. On my first run through I found 18 of the films. And one of them is a boxed set of 50 films. Mostly B-films. And many that I was looking for.

So I have those ordered and in the next few days I'll be seeing just how many of the others are available.

The Santa Claus Project Notes

drawingBoard, Scanned picture from a publication issued by the company S.K.F. (SKF) around 1940-45.

Thoughts On The Santa Claus Vid

Yeah, this one came up all of a sudden. There wasn't the long, drawn-out thought pattern that there was with the Green Hornet vid. So I'm recapping from memory.

Right In Front Of My Nose...

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

I Feel So Dumb

I can't believe I missed it. I really can't. It was one of the biggest sources and it slipped past me.. What am I talking about? Netflix, that's what.

All that checking on the internet for movies to download and I didn't once think I should look to see if I could actually have the disks sent to my house. I feel really dumb right now.

That means two things. First, I will have a much better quality for many of the movies I want to vid. Much better than the 360 x 240 pixel versions of some of the stuff. That will make a much better end product. Second, some of the projects will have to wait. If I think of something I don't currently have in the library then it will have to wait until I change the queue in order to get in it. I actually saw the Green Hornet serial I used in the last vid. Don't know the quality but it surely couldn't have been any worse than the one I used.

This also means I'm going to start ordering some of them now. I'd like to have a least a little supply on hand. Just in case the muse comes a'knocking...

I Was Gonna Call It Santy Who, But...

Deep Thoughts About Vidding [5]

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

After Thoughts

It's been three days since I uploaded the Green Hornet vid and since I posted my thoughts about the creation of the vid I figured I should also post my thoughts after it went live. It's certainly a different world now that I've gone Coyright-Free.

After talking to another vidder I decided to track my thoughts both before and after on all my vids from now on. What I remember from the first three years of vidding is a bit hazy. This will help me keep track of where I was at any particular point in time.

Green Hornet Project

The Hornet From Start To Finish

For this project I figure I'd like to chronicle the project from the very first thought. I've always thought back to where a vid began but never jotted down notes with all the details. So this is for you, and probably a lot more for me, to see where this vid came from.

The whole story is rather long but is an insight to my thinking process while creating a vid like this and is under the cut. But first, the vid...

More Gold...

Another Great Music Site

I've just been turned onto, probably, the best music site so far. Not completely free but really inexpensive. At $1.35 per song to make a music vid this is definitely a place to look. And it's got an excellent selection too.

But best of all it's got a section I love. TV/Music Themes. It's exactly what I've been looking for. One section with all the style of of music in one place. I've already got a few favorited. But I need to take a break from trying to find new music and get back to actual vidding.

The only thing I have not been able to locate on any of these sites so far is music that sounds like Mike Post. But of course, Mike Post is one of a kind...

All Sounds Same To Me...

More Time On SoundCloud

This new vidding system definitely takes a lot more time. I have to actively search for new music or music that might fit a particular project. And those searches take a lot of time.

Deep Thoughts About Vidding [4]

Deep Thought, This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic license.

Not So Much Deep But Sad

Well, not exactly about vidding. More about what's happening in real life. And sometimes those real life situations can totally take your focus away from what's fun. Like what's happening right now.

Things on this current project were going just great. I got about ¼ of the vid set. That made me feel real good. Figured I'd get a good amount done when I returned home on Sunday. And maybe even finish it up next weekend. Yeah, that's what I was hoping.

But that was last Thursday.

On Friday I got one of those emails from my boss which put me in a mood that stopped all the vidding juices cold. Without going into details it turned things upside down. No matter how hard I wanted to work on it things just weren't happening. That's what happens to the creative process at times. An incident in your real life turns a happy time into a process that seems more like a chore.

I hope I can resolve the situation so I can get back on track with my editing.

I Feel Good About Vidding Again

drawingBoard, Scanned picture from a publication issued by the company S.K.F. (SKF) around 1940-45.

Another TV Opening

Looks like it's off to a good start. Bev won't be happy that I'm doing another TV Opening but we just won't tell her, right?

I found enough Public Domain photos for the correct time period and geographical locations. Wasn't sure what would be out there. And some of the photos are, well, it's a little stretch as to them fitting perfectly. But in this arena you take what you can get.

The intro section is set. After another check tomorrow night I'll put this to sleep for the weekend. After that I'll begin the middle section.

I've got two days off with Bev and no work on this vid till Sunday night. I will, on the other hand, take some time to work on the vacation vid. Yes, sooner or later you'll get to sit through my vacation pictures. Don't worry, it will be a short one. I know no one wants to be bored by other people's vacation pictures. Just remember, this is just me doing a Motion project...

It Always Takes Longer Than You Think

Building A Library

For the past two days I have been busy mainly with downloading a whole bunch of the Public Domain movies I've found. Since billions and billions of tv episodes are now off limits I needed a fresh source. Currently I have about 150 movies available which should allow me to create a decent amount of new and interesting vids.

I definitely have a few new ideas. And some of them aren't even TV Opening Credits!

I have noticed how many times I've looked at a movie and thought, "Wow! I know what theme would go well with that movie. Too bad I can't use it...".

So once again prep work and housekeeping aRe keeping me from actual vidding. But I know laying the groundwork now will make things. Lot easier in the future...

Vid-Good Rester - "Dark"

When I find any vids created with Public Domain [or other free video] I will post them. It's not up my alley but it's within the vein of this blog.

Enjoy [or not]...

Total run time is 11 minutes.

Good Rester - "Dark"
