Collateral Damage

spindle

Casualty - Mutant Sounds

While crusing around looking for other free music I ran across a notice about how the shutdown of MegaUpload affected a really big no longer available music site Mutant Sounds.

LICKING WOUNDS AND TAKING STOCK AFTER THE CLAMPDOWN

Now that the Corporatist villains in our "justice department" have seen fit to visit tyranny upon all of us by destroying Megaupload (and with it, broad swaths of this blogs content, including the hundreds of titles from early in the life of Mutant Sounds that had recently been re-upped to Megaupload), I'm just lying low and taking stock of how best to approach the salvaging of our content. Stay tuned folks...Mutant Sounds isn't going down without a fight!

It looks like they're trying to rebuild the archives but it will take some time and effort...

Good Stuff - Free

After I decided to pursue this new avenue of vidding I wondered just how much I would actually find to vid that would interest me. A few good searches and I found a quite a few I'm interested working with. And actually some fairly well know movies which fell through the copyright cracks in the floor.

This list is by far not complete but I wanted to get this posted. Just to show that this can actually be accomplished and produce good results.

Do The Little Jobs Before They Become The Big Jobs

iTunes

Sorting, What A Boring Job

Yeah, it's boring. But if I don't sort all the music I've collected now it will really get the better of me. Right now I've only got around 200 pieces of music. I created a new iTunes library to hold it. Figured it's easier separating it rather than trying to keep everything in the same library. At the rate I'm collecting CC music it could get out of hand very quickly.

So tonight I'll be spending my time attempting to categorize the music into genres and marking the ones I think might make good theme songs. All necessary work. But seriously, not a lot of fun.

Is That Film Really Public Domain?

That's a question I've been asking myself quite a lot lately. Because sometimes I just can't tell. I find conflicting information as to a film's status. One web site states a film is Public Domain. Then another one says there;s still a copyright on the film. It's hard to start on a project if you really don't know the status of the film you want to work with.

Deep Thoughts About Vidding [3]

Deep Thought, This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic license.

A New Way Of Thinking

After I dropped everything I'd done, every procedure of vidding I lived by for three years, I found my focus had disappeared. For weeks I couldn't get my head wrapped around what I needed to do. Sometimes I wondered if I would ever make another vid. For a while it looked so hopeless I figured I'd just give up vidding as a hobby.

But then that first vid was complete and the fog seemed to disappear.

Free [Good] Music Anyone?

spindleIn the last post I talked some of the problems about how much stuff you need to wade through in order to find the good stuff. Well that wading paid off on SoundCloud. Although I've gone through quite a bit which either was not of interest or was just plain WTF, I hit on a one really excellent play list.

Ahh, No Problem Finding Music, Right?

spindleWhen I began this new path I knew that my music selection would not be as diverse as it was previously. I'd just have to see a tiny portion of some TV show and it would instantly bring to mind some TV theme which I could use in a mashup. Those were the days. But things are different now.

New Site For Music

spindleIt's tough finding music to use in a project like this. With the copyright wars ramping up more and more material is becoming unusable. That's why it will take longer to find the correct music for any particular project I have in mind.

But there are places to go. You just have to be patient once you get there.

Thoughts After That First Project

horizon, Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported

The Past

For three years the only thing I was worried about was getting that next vid out. The past two years I was averaging 45 vids a year. I really didn't see an end in sight.

But that all changed in late 2011.

Night Of The Living Dead - The Series

neverApologizeSo, here's my first vid after my copyright problems over at YouTube.

Video: Night of the Living Dead
Audio: Not As It Seems by Kevin MacLeod
TV Opening Credits style

Personally I think the results were better than I anticipated. Mainly due to finding a really good piece of music.

Enjoy...

Yeap, there's a light. Night of the Living Dead - The Series is nearing completion. And I realize it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Sure there wer bumps along the way. But they're in the past.

Things Never Go As Planned, Do They

screwUp, Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported

Back In The Saddle

Ah, it looked like a good night. I was quickly making progress on the clipping end getting quite a few excellent pieces into the library. Feeling good about how things were going I decided to take a little listen to some possible pieces of music that I might use. I remember having downloaded a few from incompetech.com a while back.

Seems I'm The Tortoise, Not The Hare

I'm finding that every since the YouTube incident I've been somewhat lackadaisical about getting started again. The procrastination is becoming obvious. It's strange cause I really enjoyed vidding previously. It's like it's a mental wall I'm having trouble getting over. I come up to it and stop dead in my tracks.

There! I've Freed The Icons Too...

wikimediaI decided to make this a Public Doman/Creative Commons site. But I went completely blank on one thing. Some of the avatars I was using weren't copyright free. I'm not talking about the program icons to show what I'm using for the creative process. I'm talking about the miscellaneous icons I had sitting on my computer that I used.

So I took this evening in order to find substitute icons from Wikimedia and replace all the old icons.

Yeah, another housecleaning task which produces no product. I promise, I'll get around to it sooner or later...

Deep Thoughts About Vidding [1]

Deep Thought, This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic license.I've had many Deep Thoughts since I changed my vidding habits. But I haven't written any of them down. So I figure that since this blog is all about how I'm changing my vidding I should keep track of those thoughts as well.

Pick A Theme - Any Theme...

spindle

The Old Ways

If I were doing mashups the old way I know what song I would pick for this Night of the Living Dead mashup. The theme to the movie Experiment in Terror. It was moody and scary and set the right tone for the movie I have.

How Many Files Did You Say You Had?

That's right. I'm still doing housekeeping on my file system. Obviously I let it go a little longer than I thought. There was a lot more to move and it's taken more time than I wanted. But it's something that needs done.

I really, really hope I can get this cleared up tonight so I can get back to actually creating something...

Housekeeping-Such A Dull Task...

houseCleaning, Civvi (talk | contribs) - (Clip art vacuum cleaner {{PD-OpenClipart}})

Housekeeping

Yes, housekeeping. But it has nothing to do with my apartment. I'm talking about computer housekeeping. When you have a multitude of large projects it's mandatory that you keep up with it. So that's what I've been doing lately.

I had to move all the old files from the previous mashups I had done into a permanent storage area on the externals in order to clear space from my MacBook's and iMac's hard drives. And moving that many files takes time. Especially when they also need copied to the backup drive.

When it comes to electronic storage paranoia is a good thing.

But I should have the files moved by the end of the weekend and I'll be back to working on Night of the Living Dead.

Two New Public Domain Blogs

publicDomainI just ran across the site Public Domain Audio Video - public domain royalty free copyright free audio video .m3u .mp3 Ogg Vorbis .wmv .mp4 and .ogv.

He also runs the site Public Domain Clip Art - a guide to better quality more plentiful public domain royalty free copyright free high resolution images, stock photos, jpgs and clipart free for commercial use.

I'm adding them to the list...

Let The Games Begin...

megauploadIt seems like we have another casualty of this upcoming war. MegaUpload has been taken down.

Yes, I know they carried a lot of illegal content. But they also were a service to be able to move large files which were NOT illegal. But that's the way this will be played out. It's one strike and you're out now.

Night of the Living Dead theme

Deciding to use Night of the Living Dead [NofLD] in a mashup is proving interesting. My first thought was to use the [NofLD] theme song. But after listening to the creepy, slow theme I've decided that it wouldn't be good for a theme song. That means I need to find appropriate music from other sources.

The Internet Archive

internet archiveWhen I started this project I wasn't sure where I would find usable video material. I knew I could always film my own but that seemed an unlikely event. There's a lot of resources I would need just to get started. It was starting to look bleak when I ran into the Internet Archive.

English Wikipedia to go dark

On January 18th, 2012 the English portion of Wikipedia will be non-existent.

San Francisco -- January 16, 2012 -- On January 18, 2012, in an unprecedented decision, the Wikipedia community has chosen to blackout the English version of Wikipedia for 24 hours, in protest against proposed legislation in the United States — the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and PROTECTIP (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate. If passed, this legislation will harm the free and open Internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States.

So, what have I been up to lately? A couple of things actually. And in a couple of the projects. Still no real idea on when I'll get something out. Besides these projects there's quite a bit to do at work. And sometimes that just makes me too tired to work on the fun stuff. But I'm working on it...

Under voter pressure, members of Congress backpedal (hard) on SOPA

The public outcry over the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act seems to have gotten so loud that even members of Congress can hear it. On Thursday we covered the news that Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) was expressing second thoughts about SOPA's DNS provisions. He said he changed his mind after he "heard from a number of Vermonters" on the issue.

Update : The Obama administration has come out in opposition to SOPA in its current form. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has also promised that SOPA will not proceed to a vote until "consensus" has developed.

So, What You Gonna Vid Now?

drawingBoard, Scanned picture from a publication issued by the company S.K.F. (SKF) around 1940-45.
I've been thinking about this and I'm probably not going to do a lot of video to begin with. Mainly cause I don't have a lot video to work with. Shooting video takes time and also I am in need of a good tripod before I would start. I have a couple of ideas that will come before I begin doing actual video projects again.

First in line, as I have said before, is the vacation video I promised Beverly. Now we shot all photos so it's not going to be a pure video style project. Bt it will definitely be a very animated project. That's cause I'm going to use this as my testing grounds for learning Apple Motion.

Copyright Infringement Gone Wild

copyrightI was listening to NPR this Saturday morning and a story came on about Karaoke. Normally I would have just ignored a story like that but this story involved Sony. Sony is now making attacks on karaoke for copyright infringement. Because they want their share.

There's even people who will measure a place with a tape measure where karaoke takes place to judge whether it's small enough to be considered just a bar or is large enough to be considered a performance stage.

As much as I dislike karaoke I believe this is taking is too far. And it all comes down to Sony's greed and their attitude of We don't want anybody to steal our stuff.

But some companies are fighting back: Sony Sued Over Karaoke Music Copyright Infringement Claims Of Almost $1.3 Billion

A GarageBand Test

garagebandLogoAs I pointed out previously GarageBand will allow you to make some generic genré music. It's not great but it will do in a pinch. Here's a little piece I created. I did nothing to the parameters, all I did was push the Latin button.

While experimenting with this I figured I would be able to record various versions of the same piece using different instruments. I also found I will be able to silence all but one instrument which gives a sometimes interesting effect.

I'll still be looking for better Creative Commons music but I definitely will keep this in mind.

First Motion Test

finalCutProAfter going through a few of the tutorials I figured it was time to just jump in and try something. Since this is a trip vid I needed to have a map of the journey. And on that map there needed to be a red line tracing the trip.

And you know the music that needed to go with this one...

Practice, Practice, And More Practice Makes Perfect

appleMotionWell, I've just got done going through a few tutorials and although I did get lost in 3D space a couple of times I actually did get some decent results. I haven't had this much fun since, ooooh let me think, April of 2009 when I started the mashups.

Now Off To The Tutorials

appleMotionI finally got all the Motion tutorials converted and back into iTunes. And what that means is, I can finally start delving into the actually workings of Motion. And now I can understand what I've heard when people say You can get lost in 3D space real easy. Up is down and down is sideways. But I think I'm off to a good start.

iTunes $*ç&s

iTunes
Okay, maybe not banned. But certainly in the doghouse. I spent the better part of the last week converting all my downloaded podcasts and reimporting just so they would sort the way I needed them. If I hadn't I would have ended up with 150 podcasts in one folder with no way to have them sort internally except for reverse chronological order.

But as I sit here and write this the last of the podcasts is being converted and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Now maybe I can start going through the tutorials and figuring out what I'll need to do with the vacation vid.

It's also caused my TV viewing to suffer as all the conversions are going on with the iMac which is the same computer I use for watching TV. A double whammy...

But as I've been checking all the podcasts are showing up in individually prepared, named folders. Forget the fact that those folders are sorted in some cockamamie fashion that only the iDiots Grand Wizards of Apple can tell me. I used to be able to sort everything before the disastrous upgrade.

So beginning next week I'll start posting on the progress of the Apple Motion learning and the sorting of the pictures [ which has been going on this week but I forgot to post it ].

Now That's Free Music

garagebandLogoPreviously I posted about how difficult it was going to be to find music to use for some of my project, specifically the ones which will contain material that I'm actually creating myself. And I said how the Creative Common Share Alike license wasn't the way I wanted to go because it allowed other people to actually use what I've done for commercial purposes if they were so inclined.

iTunes 10 Sucks-But You Already Knew That...

iTunes
I used iTunes to maintain my video library including videos I collected, sample pieces, tutorials, and vids I made. And they all played nicely confined to their own little areas that I created for them. But! It seems that Apple had other plans for this program and now it has become a Royal.Pain.In.The.Ass!!!

Even though this could be listed as tl;dr I have to say this is the most non-verbose recounting of this whole affair. And it's still pretty long...

Slight Change In Plans

iPhoto
I had figured I would continue on my quest to create a full motion graphics of a not so successful super-heroine with the help of a few friends. That was the plan. But thing don't always go as planned. Sometimes your past comes back to haunt you.

My Relevant Other Has Different Plans

Seems that I have been reminded of a promise I made a while back [ two years to be exact ] that I was supposed to take our vacation photos and turn them into something more than just a bunch of pictures in an envelope. You know. The way that most people show you pictures of their vacation.

Ahhh, the power of your Relevant Other can be formidable at times.

So I have decided to move the motion graphics comic down in the queue and take up the chore I agreed to two years ago. This just means that I will be able to experiment on the vacation video for my Relevant Other first before moving back to the motion comic.

SO I have been gathering some examples for this [ although the pickings are sparse ] in an attempt to create something that she can show off to her friends at work. At least that's the plan. Guess I'll find out if I'm successful when it's finished...
